About

A clinician and researcher focused on how pets live healthier, longer lives.

Dr. Justin Shmalberg

I've spent my career approaching one question from several angles: what actually helps pets stay healthy, mobile, and resilient for longer?

Before veterinary school, I founded one of the early natural pet supply retailers in the Midwest. It was an early lesson in the gap between what gets sold as healthy and what evidence actually supports. I earned my veterinary degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, then completed advanced training in acupuncture for small animals and horses, followed by advanced training in nutrition and integrative medicine at the University of Florida, where I helped establish and led one of the first integrative medicine services at a U.S. veterinary teaching hospital and remain on faculty as a Clinical Professor.

The work has moved through clinical nutrition, sports medicine and rehabilitation, integrative care, supplement formulation, academic research, and industry leadership in pet food R&D. Over time, those threads have converged on a larger question: how pets age, and what we can actually do to support healthier years rather than just more years.

Today my time is split between teaching at UF, advising on clinical cases in integrative medicine, nutrition, and infectious disease, formulating supplements and minimally processed foods, writing, and consulting with aligned companies.
